Description

The Hermitage is an octagonal Gothick folly dating from the early 19th century. It features a tall pyramidal slate roof, which was originally thatched according to an 1825 sketch, aligning with the building's rustic character. The corners are adorned with roughly hewn and halved tree trunks, believed to be Spanish walnut, creating the appearance of supporting the roof. Similar halved branches are found under the eaves, while the walls are constructed of coursed stone. At one time, a cross was placed at the apex of the roof when it was converted into a chapel.

Access is from the northern side through a pointed archway leading to a boarded door. The windows vary in design: two sides have large circular windows with quatrefoil cusping, one side features a small quatrefoil window, another has a two-light cusped window, and one displays a Maltese cross-shaped light, while two sides are blind. Inside, the walls are plastered and feature Gothick panels, giving the space a chapter-house-like character.
