Description

Baron's Hill is a Scottish Arts and Crafts style house dating from 1913, designed by W. Scott. It is a two-storey, five-bay rectangular building with a single-storey service wing. The walls are harled with stone dressings. A corbelled string runs at the first-floor level, along with an eaves course. The windows are bipartite and tripartite, and the dormerheads are stone and curvilinear, with deep eaves.

The west-facing (entrance) elevation features five bays. The central three bays are the most prominent, with a doorcase to the right, featuring a stone surround, two-leaf wooden doors, a raised moulded panel above depicting a lion rampant, and a dentil cill to a dormerheaded window above. A bipartite window is to the left of the door, and a single window is far to the left. Dormerheaded windows are above each bay. To the outer right, an advanced gabled bay has a bow at ground level with three windows, a cill course, a deep blocking course, a shield motif in the centre, and a tripartite window on the first floor. The bay is finished with a thistle finial. A circular corner tower extends to the outer left, featuring three windows on both the ground and first floors, a cill and eaves course, a corbelled string course, and a bellcast roof with overhanging eaves.

The north-facing side elevation has a window at ground level to the right and a bipartite window at first floor to the left. An advanced chimney wall runs diagonally across the gable wall, with a stack at the wallhead.

The east-facing rear elevation presents three bays, with two single-light windows in the centre and one off-centre to the right. A tripartite stair window is centrally positioned, alongside another tripartite window to the right, and a single light to the left. A tall stack is located to the left with an advanced chimney wall, offset to the right. The outer bays have a piended roof, with a canted dormer over the centre bay.

The south-facing side elevation showcases two bays, including an advanced, squared, single-storey inglenook bay with a piended roof and an advanced, offset chimney wall with a tall stack. A canted single-storey window is to the right, with a tripartite window above.

The windows are plate glass sash and case, with stained glass to the stair and inglenook windows. The roof is covered with grey/green slate, with tall harled stacks. Ashlar detailing is present at the apex of the gabled bays, and there are bold beak skewputts.

The service wing has a north elevation with five bays: windows to the four bays to the right, a larger window in the second bay from the right, and a door in the outer left bay. The east elevation features a bipartite window, while the south elevation has five bays, with a door to the outer left and the second bay from the right. The service wing has a piended slate roof, a harled stack, and rooflights offset to the right and left.

The interior includes a timber stair with a half-turn and landings. Original timber chimneypieces are present, along with an inglenook recess with an overmantel flanked by small windows with stained glass panels.
