Description
Torphichen Preceptory and Torphichen Parish Church is a traditional T-plan building constructed in 1756. It incorporates the northern wall of the nave of the Preceptory Church. The exterior is made of coursed rubble and features a skew-gabled roof covered with slate. A notable feature is the 'bird-cage' belfry, which houses a bell made by John Meikle in 1700. The church has round-headed windows and a fore-stair at the southern arm. There is a later addition from the 19th century at the western end. Inside, the church has plaster ceilings, lofts, a pulpit, and folding communion pews that were installed in 1803.
