Description
West Range
Probably early 19th century farm steading. A good example of a relatively unaltered improvement period steading with one of the few surviving horse mills in the area. Situated due west of Lake of Menteith, the steading is plain but substantial, suggesting that Malling was a productive farm. It originally formed the heart of the Malling Estate, owned by the Duke of Montrose. The steading is located immediately to the southeast of Malling Mill (see separate listing), a water mill dating back to the 17th century. The horse mill is the successor to this earlier mill, representing the evolution of power sources during the agricultural revolution in the early 19th century.
The complex is composed of a central section (originally U-shaped) flanked to the east by an access lane and threshing barn with horse mill, and to the west by a single storey range. The buildings are constructed of random rubble with traces of whitewash, some rubble quoins and lintels to various openings. All roofs are slated throughout with various rooflights.
Central Range
To the north, a single storey range comprises two adjoining buildings with different roofs: to the east, a piend-roofed barn; to the west, a building with pitched roof currently used as stables (as of 2004). Access to the east barn is from the south, while the stables are accessed from the north via two timber-boarded doors with flagstone thresholds. The east barn has a variety of openings, including a timber multi-pane window with shutters to lower sections. Concrete floors run throughout. Internally, remnants of roof supports below the existing wallhead suggest that the range has been heightened. A blocked door with timber lintel to the east barn indicates that the north range has undergone alterations, reflecting changing agricultural use. A 20th-century corrugated iron and timber barn is attached to the north elevation of the east barn. All that remains of the former south and west wings of the original U-shaped central range is the rubble wallhead, now forming the lower exterior walls to a large 20th-century brick and concrete cattle court.
East Range
A two-storey piend-roofed threshing barn with horse mill to the rear. Various openings include, to the principal (west) elevation facing the lane, two timber-boarded doors to ground floor with hayloft door above. To the north (side) elevation, large timber doors spanning the entire width of the elevation (possibly a 20th-century insertion) with a pair of small louvred openings above. The south (side) elevation is blank except for a fine ventilation slit to the centre of the first floor. The rear (east) elevation features a substantial pentagonal horse mill with corrugated iron roof adjoining the barn, with a 20th-century corrugated iron lean-to attached to the right. Two pairs of timber doors stand either side of the horse mill, with exposed rafters and a central supporting beam to the interior. The interior of the threshing barn was not seen at the time of resurvey (2004).
West Range
A long single storey range. The east elevation overlooks the central complex. To the left stands a piend-roofed bothy with a single timber casement window, small rendered stack with clay can, and timber-boarded door to the south return. To the right, the range continues with pitched roof at lower level, featuring two boarded doors and timber shed attached to the north. A boarded door provides access to the north return. The rear (west) elevation is blank except for a small timber casement window to the bothy.
