Description
The walled garden at Glenfinart is a notable example of an early 19th century walled garden, featuring an unusual shape with a bowed east wall and a curved southwest corner. It is part of the remains of the Glenfinart estate.
Glenfinart House was constructed around 1837 on the site of a previous residence belonging to the earls of Dunmore, and the walled garden likely dates from this same period. The garden is enclosed by a large rubble wall approximately 3 meters high, topped with flat sandstone capstones. There are two main entrances, one to the west and one to the south. The first edition Ordnance Survey map indicates that the main range of buildings was located along the north wall, with greenhouses inside the garden; however, none of the greenhouses remain, and the brick buildings are in a ruinous state. The garden's shape is distinctive, with the southwest corner curving due to the river cutting off that section. The east wall is a long, curved structure. Just to the north of the north wall, there is a water feature, which includes a roughly formed vault over a stream.
