Description
The South Barrack Block, located in the Garrison of Inversnaid, is the remains of a barrack built between 1718 and 1719 under the direction of architects James Smith and Andrew Jelfe. This structure was part of the Government's efforts to control Jacobite sympathisers after the 1715 rebellion. Today, part of the remains has been adapted into a roofless sheep fank, while the other remains have been integrated into a 19th-century barn. The site highlights the area's historical connections to the Jacobite uprising and the Government's strategies in the Highlands during the 18th century.
Originally, the barracks were designed as a near square enclosure, with the northern and southern sides formed by rectangular barrack blocks. The northern barrack block still exists, albeit in a much-reduced state, and has been modified in the 19th and 20th centuries to create a sheep fank. The northern, western, and eastern rubble walls remain at ground floor level, along with dividing walls that extend southward. In the northeastern compartment, there are masonry springers that indicate the presence of a barrel-vaulted roof. The southern wall has been replaced by a later wall that runs just south of the original line, and additional rubble enclosures have been added to the north side of the original northern wall.
The southern barrack block has been extensively rebuilt, likely in the 19th century, to create a barn that follows the same footprint as the original barrack. This barn features painted rubble walls with dressed quoins and a piended corrugated metal roof, retaining the lower portions and footings of the original barrack's exterior walls.
Adjacent to the large barn on the northeast is a small square-plan building, dating from the 19th century, which has rubble walls with dressed quoins and a corrugated metal roof. This building may also incorporate fabric from the original 1718-19 structure in its western wall.
