Description
The Lauder Memorial, built by Harry Lauder in memory of his son John, who was killed in action in 1916, is located on a steep knoll south of Invernoaden. This memorial is notable for its artistic significance as a piece of memorial art and its association with Lauder, a prominent Scottish entertainer in the early 20th century, who owned the nearby Glenbranter estate.
The memorial features a main structure and two additional memorials, all positioned at the top of the knoll and enclosed by ornate cast iron railings. The main memorial consists of a large square block of masonry made from squared whin and rusticated red sandstone dressings, set on a plinth with four steps and topped with an overhanging pyramidal cap. The plaque and inscription are located on the southwest side and are presented in three stages. Stone corbels support a wide plinth that bears a short inscription. Above this, a pair of winged victory figures and a second female figure flank the principal inscription, both gazing upward at a pediment plaque that features a low-relief bust of John Lauder in uniform within a roundel.
To the north, the two additional memorials commemorate Ann Vallance, Harry Lauder's wife, and her parents. Both are granite Celtic crosses adorned with incised knotwork.
