Description

Strone House is a mid-19th century villa featuring a three-bay, two-storey rectangular design with a piend roof. It is notable for its classical proportions and details, making it one of the few such villas along the shores of Strone and Blairmore. Although the house has lost its rear outbuildings and much of its interior, it remains a distinctive structure that positively contributes to the area.

The main elevation of Strone House has largely retained its original appearance. It features a central entrance flanked by square-plan pillars and half-pillars that support a jettied central tripartite bay. The only decorative element is the scrolled parapets at the entrance steps. On either side of the entrance are square, flat-roofed bays with tripartite windows separated by undecorated mullions. Above these, the side bays have tripartite windows with stripped classical pillar mullions, and the lintels extend slightly from the eaves band course, which is topped by a heavy cornice. In front of the house is a balustraded terrace, while at the rear, the central bay projects slightly and contains a large mullioned and transomed stair window, which may have been added later.

The outbuildings shown on early Ordnance Survey maps have been demolished, although a gabled block from the 1960s remains.

Inside, little of the original interior survives due to a fire, but some features such as the timber stair with cast iron balusters, a leaded stair window, and a few four-panelled doors are still present.

The front elevation is constructed of sandstone ashlar, while the sides and rear are made of rubble, with the rear being harled. The roof is slate, with stone wallhead stacks and clay cans. Most of the windows have been replaced with timber. Surrounding the house is a rubble boundary wall, which includes square-plan gatepiers and a heavy cast iron gate.
