Description

Tyneshandon is a mid-19th century multi-use building located in the village of Strone, overlooking Strone Pier. It is a typical example of buildings found near Clyde piers and is an important part of the group of structures along the Strone shore. The building features five bays and two storeys, with a projecting gable front to the west and a porch supported by cast iron columns.

Built around the same time as the pier in 1847, Tyneshandon likely served as a tenement with commercial spaces, including a ticket office for steamer passengers on the ground floor. The building has retained much of its original appearance, with five window bays on the first floor, where the windows in the gable front have hoodmoulds. The ground floor housed at least two businesses, one of which later added the barleytwist-columned porch in the 19th century. There are also two entrances on the front and two doors at the rear, one leading to the central stair. Originally, the windows may have had lying panes at both the top and bottom, but the lower panes have been replaced with plate glass on the front. The eaves overhang on all sides, except for part of the rear elevation.

At the time of the site visit in August 2004, the buildings behind Tyneshandon and two lean-to porches on the rear elevation were being demolished.

The building's materials include painted squared sandstone on the front elevation and painted rubble with sandstone dressings at the rear. It has a slate roof with stone stacks, cast iron rooflights, a cast iron porch with a corrugated asbestos roof, and timber sash and case windows, featuring both lying-pane and plate glass.
