Description

The Game Larder at Glen Tanar House, designed by George Truefitt in the later 19th century, is a single-storey, T-plan structure. It is built from tooled, coursed granite rubble with ladder snecking, featuring rough-faced long and short dressings that are finely finished at the margins. The building has sloping cills and overhanging eaves.

On the southeast elevation, the design is asymmetrical with five bays. The central bay is advanced and includes a 4-light bipartite window, flanked by two 3-light windows on the right return and a 3-light window on the left return. There are horizontal 5-light dormers on both left and right returns at the breaking pitch, along with a 2-light window in the flanking bay to the right. A stained glass timber lean-to is located on the outer right, and there is a panelled timber door with mesh upper panels in the penultimate bay to the left. The outer left bay features a 6-light window and a piend-roofed 4-light horizontal dormer with a timber finial at the ridge.

The northeast elevation consists of a single bay with a 7-light stained glass timber lean-to against the granite wall. The northwest elevation is also asymmetrical with five bays, featuring a 3-light window in the centre bay, flanked by two boarded timber doors, one of which has mesh panels. There is a 6-light window in the outer right bay and a 2-light window flanked on the left by a stained glass timber lean-to. This elevation also includes a piend-roofed 4-light horizontal dormer with a timber finial at the ridge.

The southwest elevation has a single bay that includes a timber notice board and leaflet box. The building predominantly features single pane mesh-covered window openings and has a piended purple-grey slate roof with fishscale banding and lead ridges, while the lean-to has a corrugated-asbestos roof. A shouldered, coped granite wallhead stack is located on the northeast side, and PVCu rainwater goods are installed.

Inside, there are four principal rooms and a small room beneath the lean-to, which includes a decorative row of tiles and retains larder hooks and pulleys.
