Description
Cardross House is an L-plan building that originally dates back to the late 16th century. It is three storeys high, featuring a four-storey southwest tower with a circular staircase that is accessed at the first floor level in the northeast re-entrant angle. The tower has scroll skews and corbelled turrets at the southwest and southeast corners. Inside, there is a ceiling from 1598, although the rest of the interior was remodeled in the early 18th century and again in 1747. Around 1790, wings were added to the northeast and northwest, creating a symmetrical northern frontage with a recessed center. A single-storey and basement entrance hall with a Roman Doric porch was inserted around 1820, and a library was formed in the northeast wing. There is also a two-storey office wing from the 18th century that was refronted on the south side, along with some mid-19th century additions. The building is harled with margins throughout.
