Description
This building, known as Carrick Buildings, was designed by William Cowie and completed in 1912. It is a two-storey, 12-bay, L-plan structure with a gabled roof, originally built as a school and currently serving as a college since 2013. The exterior is primarily red sandstone ashlar, with contrasting render on the rear and side elevations, featuring some red sandstone margins. The building has a base course and cornice, with various bi-partite and tri-partite window openings. The north and south elevations include single-storey entrance porches with piended roofs and segmental-arched entrances. Round-arched dormer heads break the eaves on the north, south, and west sides, while the north elevation features a large window opening on the upper storey that extends above the roofline.
On the east elevation facing Henrietta Street, the design is symmetrical with an advanced central section of six bays. The ground floor has regular window openings, while the upper storey has four central bays with a bracketed moulded cill course. The outer bays feature window openings with moulded architraves, large key-stones, and bracketed segmental-arched pediments. Carved coats of arms are located in the gableheads above, with the right one dated 1912 and the left one initialled GGHS, along with a balustrade between the gables. The outer edges are marked by pilasters, with cartouches in the upper sections topped by urns. Flanking the central section are three recessed symmetrical bays, with a central pedimented window on the ground floor and an oculus above.
The interior, as seen in 2012, has been largely remodelled to create modern educational spaces, although some original doors with moulded timber architraves remain. An octagonal glazed lantern illuminates the hall.
Most windows are multi-pane timber replacements in a sash and case style, featuring tilting lower sashes. The roof is predominantly covered with replacement grey slates and red ridge tiles.
The boundary wall to the west consists of a low wall topped with decorative iron railings, while the east side has a tall coped rubble wall with some bricked openings. Brick walls are present to the north and south.
