Description

Sundrum Mains is a farmhouse and steading dating from around 1830, associated with Sundrum Castle. The farmhouse features a plain two-storey U-shaped block with five bays and single bay advanced wings. It is likely that an earlier building was modified, with the wings and an attached cottage on the west added around 1830. The main front of the central section is constructed of coursed ashlar, while the wings and attached cottage are made of rubble. The building has a main cavetto cornice and mostly features sash and case windows, with axial stacks and piended slate roofs. The rear elevation is also rubble, with various window sizes that are generally symmetrical. There is an outer wall of what may have been a former pig sty attached to the north.

The steading, dated 1831, consists of a two-storey range with a 2-4-2 bay configuration and a higher central section, ramping down to a single storey at the rear. It is built of coursed snecked rubble with ashlar dressings. The ground floor has five four-centred arches that support a plain upper floor, which features vertical ventilation slits and a large central loft access door. The eastern section includes living accommodation above farm offices, with end stacks and slate roofs.

The rear elevation of the steading has ventilation slots, various door and window openings, and a large central doorway. There is a largely intact rubble horse mill with a slated, zinc-capped roof and weathervane, and the roof timbers are intact. Additionally, there are remains of a gas house to the north of the steading.
