Description

This outbuilding at Gardie Cottage in Bressay dates from around 1820, with an extension added around 1880. It is a single-storey and attic structure featuring a symmetrical Gothick design with three bays. The walls are harled and sit on a flagstone rubble base course.

The principal elevation faces west and includes a gabled porch with a pointed-arched, multi-pane timber sash and case window that projects from the center bay. There are margined windows with modern four-pane glazing and blind pointed arch-heads in the flanking bays.

On the south gable, there are two bays with windows located at both the ground and first floors in the bay on the right. The east elevation, or rear, has a single window centered at the ground level, with a well-designed modern gabled wing that advances to the right.

The building features modern glazing throughout. The porch has a fish-scale slate roof, while the main house and the wing have a purple-grey slate roof with a tiled ridge and cement skew copes. The apex stacks are harled and topped with circular cans.

Adjacent to the north of the house are outbuildings constructed of rubble, featuring a pedimented gable. The garden walls consist of high flagstone rubble walls that adjoin the south gable of the house and the east gable of the wing, which connects with a stable to the south. There is also a flagstone rubble wall with a large stabbed cope next to the west elevation, curving around to join the south garden wall.
