Description
The former office of Turnbulls Finishing Works, designed by Alexander Inglis and dated 1911, is a 2-storey and attic, 8-bay rectangular-plan building. It features a prominent 5-stage Modern Movement water tower and single-storey sheds to the northeast and northwest. The structure is constructed of harled brick with red ashlar sandstone dressings, including an ashlar base course, a pronounced cornice at the first floor, and a moulded eaves course. The building has regular fenestration with margined openings on all floors, multi-pane top hopper windows, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
The southeast elevation, which is the principal facade, has a slightly advanced central bay. It includes an arched consoled hood above a 2-leaf panelled door, which is topped with a concave multi-pane fanlight. An inscription is located at the attic level. The northeast elevation features three windows at the gable head, while the remaining 12-bay sheds to the northeast and northwest have a pair of curvilinear gables on the northeast side.
The tower has a low arched entrance with a multi-paned oriel window at the first stage, three deeply recessed rectangular windows linked by a projecting cill at the third stage, and a keystoned architraved window above. The watch tower is capped with balustraded parapets between canted corners.
Access to the interior was not possible in 2006, but original plans indicate that it features timber floors supported by steel joists and timber panelling in the reception area and stair.
