Description

The building is a stable, part of Traquair Manse. It was rebuilt between 1793 and 1794, with additions and repairs made in 1814. It is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan former manse, accompanied by a later central porch and a two-storey rear addition. To the southwest of the house is a courtyard range of outbuildings, including former stables and offices. The main structure is harled and painted, concealing the original construction material, with stone window and door dressings.

The principal, southwest-facing elevation features a two-storey, three-bay design. A central, enclosed porch with a pitched roof and overhanging eaves is present, along with timber cross bracing and decorative brackets at the front angles. The porch features a timber-panelled entrance door leading to a semi-glazed inner hall door, with blind returns. Bipartite windows are located in the left bay. The northwest elevation shows a gabled end of the main house, with windows on the first floor to the left and centre. A lean-to porch, with a door and window, conceals the left bay of the original ground floor and part of the ground floor of a later two-storey, two-bay kitchen extension to the left.

The northeast-facing rear elevation is dominated by a two-storey canted window to the left, featuring stone mullioned bipartite windows with single lights to the returning cants, and a staircase window on the first floor centre. To the right is an advanced two-storey, blind gabled end of a “kitchen extension,” with windows to the left return. The southeast elevation displays a gabled end of the main house rising to a gablehead stack.

Most windows are timber sash and case with 12 panes of glass, with some plate glass in the rear bay window. Smaller rear windows have lesser pane glazing. Three two-pane cast-iron Carron lights, originally in the attic of the main elevation, have been replaced by three modern Velux windows – the central one smaller than the flanking windows. The roof is a pitched slate roof with open verges, lead flashing on the main house, and a piended roof on the outbuilding range. Painted cast-iron rainwater goods are present. Tall harled gablehead stacks have plain metal cans and stone neck copes, along with a small square wallhead stack at the northeast joint between the house and later extension.

The interior was not inspected in 2002, but a notable bedroom fireplace surround is known to exist, featuring timber and gesso work with a central panel depicting a linden or lemon tree, flanked by church depictions and tulips surmounting the jambs.

The outbuildings, including the former offices and stable, comprise a single-and-a-half-story rectangular-plan range with gabled ends. The northeast side features a doorway to the right, a rectangular-headed timber-doored cart entrance to the centre, and a small window with a timber-boarded door leading to a piend-roofed hayloft entrance. A single-story, rectangular-plan range runs parallel to the larger range on the northwest side.
