Description
Kirkhouse Lodge is a picturesque single-storey and attic lodge built in 1867, featuring an asymmetric design. The building has undergone later alterations, including a contemporary pitch-roofed extension added to the rear in 2003. It has overhanging eaves supported by timber purlins. The principal elevations are constructed of rock-faced coursed ashlar with ashlar dressings, while the rear is made of whinstone rubble.
On the northeast, or principal elevation, there is an advanced gabled entrance porch. This porch features a later timber boarded door set in a roll-moulded shouldered surround, with the date (1867) and a monogram (BQ) inscribed above. There are narrow windows on the returns and a gabled bay to the left. The windows are predominantly modern painted aluminium-framed, with small diamond quarry windows located in the gableheads. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there is a tall corniced sandstone chimney stack topped with small cylindrical cans.
