Description
The cottages at 6 Primrosehill Farm Cottages date from the earlier to mid-19th century, with later additions and alterations. They form a symmetrical U-shaped range, comprising a two-storey, eight-bay section facing north, and single-storey, three-bay blocks adjoined at right angles to the east and west, enclosing a courtyard to the front.
The north-facing range is harled, with timber bargeboards to the gabled upper windows. Rendered mullions feature on the bipartites, and there are projecting cills. The east and west wings are constructed from squared and snecked, tooled cream sandstone rubble, with tooled quoins and long and short surrounds to the openings, also with projecting cills. Slightly advanced, droved cream sandstone gabled entrances are present throughout, heavily weathered in parts, each featuring blind arrowslits centred in the gableheads, and bracketed skewputts. A single-storey, rectangular-plan ancillary structure is situated at the rear.
The south (entrance) elevation of the north range presents eight bays, divided into two symmetrical four-bay sections. Part-glazed, boarded timber doors are set within gabled entrances offset to the left (for numbers 5 and 7) and right (for numbers 6 and 8) of the central area. Bipartite windows are at both floors in the bays to the outer left and right, with gabled upper windows breaking the eaves. Square-headed pend openings in the single-storey corner bays link the single-storey blocks to the front courtyard. The north (rear) elevation has single-storey, 2- and 4-bay lean-to projections with regularly spaced single and bipartite windows; boarded timber doors are in the re-entrant angles. Remaining bays have single windows on both floors, again with gabled upper windows breaking the eaves, and square-headed pend openings in the bays to the outer right and left.
The west range's east (entrance) elevation features a gabled entrance breaking the eaves at the centre, with a boarded timber door at ground level and single windows in the flanking bays. The south (side) elevation features a blind arrowslit opening centred in the apex. The east range’s west (entrance) elevation is similar. Its south (side) elevation also has a blind arrowslit opening. A lean-to garage addition is recessed to the right.
Predominantly four-pane upper and two-pane lower glazing is found in timber sash and case front windows on the north range. The rear windows have plate glass in timber sash and case frames, and small rooflights are present. Windows in the east and west wings have twelve-pane, lying-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames. Grey slate covers the roofs, with stone coped skews and bracketed skewputts. Coped red brick ridge and apex stacks rise from the roof, along with various circular cans. The interiors were not inspected in 1998.
The ancillary structure is constructed from rubble with tooled rubble dressings, featuring regularly spaced square-headed doorways and a continuous grey slate roof. Squared coping is evident on the tooled rubble walls, forming individual enclosures to the front, though most gates are missing.
