Description
Mertoun Mill is a former corn and flour mill, likely built in the early 19th century and possibly incorporating earlier materials. It is a 2-and 3-storey, 7-bay building with a T-plan, situated against steeply rising ground. The main elevation faces the river and features a steeply-pitched piend-roofed wing that is advanced to the right, with two adjoining gabled blocks that step down in height to the left. The structure is constructed from a mix of grey and pink sandstone rubble, with squared red sandstone margins.
The fenestration is irregular, with small window openings on the south and east elevations, most of which are now blocked on the east side. There are loading doors on the first floor of both the south and east elevations, along with timber-boarded doors on these sides. The south elevation also has enlarged vehicle entrances. At the southeast corner, there is a wheel pit that currently lacks machinery.
Some windows retain remnants of timber glazing bars. The roof is covered with Welsh slate and features zinc ridges, while cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.
