Description

Mertoun Glebe is a former manse built between 1767 and 1769 by John Lockie. This two-storey building has a three-bay, roughly rectangular plan and features 19th and early 20th century additions. It is part of a U-shaped complex that includes former stabling and steading ranges. The exterior is made of painted rubble with red sandstone cills and margins. A prominent two-storey gabled porch is located at the front, while the rear has a central gable with a date, and there are rectangular dormers above.

On the southeast elevation, which is the principal facade, the design is symmetrical. The advanced gabled central bay has windows on both the ground and first floors, and to the right, there is a stone doorpiece with a cornice and pediment. The outer bays at the ground floor feature stop-chamfered bipartite windows, while the first floor has single windows and dormers centered above. To the left, there is a single-storey pitched bay, and to the right, a single-storey and attic, two-bay extension with canted five-light dormers from the 20th century.

The northwest elevation faces the courtyard and consists of three bays. The ground floor is partly sunk below ground level and has a later pitched-roof porch to the left. There is a central piended porch located off-center to the left, also below ground level, with a small window to the left. A central stair window is present, along with a gable featuring a red sandstone roundel dated '1767'. The outer bays have flanking windows on the first floor. Additionally, there is a two-storey flat roof extension set in the left re-entrant angle, a pitched roof former stabling area to the left (which has a later garage door), and a pitched roof former dairy and byre to the right with a square ventilator and a later garage extension.

The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a pitched roof covered with graded grey slates, terracotta ridge tiles, lead-covered stone skews, and corniced gable-end and ridge stacks with tapered square clay cans.
