Description
Carolside Bridge, located in Carolside, Earlston, is a late 18th-century structure attributed to the styles of Alexander Stevens or William Elliot. This picturesque bridge spans approximately 40 feet across the Leader Water, connecting the Carolside and Leadervale estates. The bridge is primarily constructed of harl pointed sandstone rubble, with some areas featuring render repairs, and is adorned with sandstone ashlar dressings.
The design includes regularly spaced raised ashlar voussoirs beneath continuous round arched bands, and prominent corbels support the parapets, which are balustraded at the center. The approach walls are stepped out to the north and south, and the bridge features circular-plan terminating piers topped with circular caps. Additionally, there are mid to late 19th-century iron gatepiers and a gate located to the north.
