Description

This is a picturesque-style workers’ housing built in 1889 for Sir Charles Tennant, constructed and designed by estate joiners and masons. The building is rectangular in plan, with four bays and two and a half storeys, dominated by a central gable. It is built of locally quarried coursed and squared whinstone, with tabbed ashlar quoins and dressings, and features an open timber porch.

The south-east (principal) elevation is characterised by stone steps leading to an advanced, gabled timber porch to the second bay, which provides the entrance to Number 2. The porch has heavy uprights, a braced gablehead, exposed rafters to the sides, timber balustrades in the lower half, and a timber boarded door with large wrought-iron hinges. To the left of the entrance is a single-storey wallhead with a bipartite window to the ground floor and a timber gabled dormer window to the upper half-floor. To the right of the entrance, a central gable is flanked by a bipartite window to the ground floor and a single window to the upper floor, with a moulded date stone (1889) inset between the windows. Further to the right is a single-storey wallhead with a bipartite window to the ground floor and a timber gabled dormer window to the half-floor. Exposed rafters and overhanging eaves are consistent across the elevation.

The south-west elevation, relating to Number 1, showcases a one and a half-storey gabled end with a central door within a timber porch complete with heavy uprights, a braced gablehead with a king-post finial, exposed rafters to the sides (formerly open, now glazed and supported on timber bases, with a semi-glazed panelled entrance door), and a window to the left. A gablehead window is located to the left of the upper floor, and plain bargeboarding is present. An adjoining single-storey, flat-roofed extension extends to the left.

The north-east elevation, representing Number 3, is similar to the south-west elevation but with the plan reversed.

The north-west (rear) elevation is regularly fenestrated and incorporates single-storey, flat-roofed extensions.

The windows are timber sash and case, with plate-glass glazing in the larger ground floor windows and four-pane glazing in the attic dormer windows. Side porch in-fills have three-pane fixed glazing. The pitched slate roof has lead ridging, exposed timber purlins and rafters, plain timber bargeboarding, and later single-pane Velux roof lights (one per property). Painted cast-iron rainwater goods are visible. The building is ornamented by a pair of roofline ashlar stacks with projecting neck copes and plain cans, some of which have been replaced.

The interior retains a near-original room plan, with single-storey bathroom/scullery extensions to the rear. Original timber doors, skirting boards, and stairs are present, and the properties continue to be used as residential accommodation.
