Description

Riverside is an earlier to mid-19th century building, originally a near T-plan range with commercial premises to the front, and incorporating the remains of a former sawmill to the northeast and former kennels at the rear. It is constructed of harl-pointed rubble whinstone with sandstone dressings, some of which are lightly droved. A part brick-built gabled addition is present to the southeast. The building features overhanging timber eaves with bracketed supports and timber bargeboards to the gableheads and dormers. Sandstone surrounds to openings are stop-chamfered, with sandstone mullions and projecting cills.

The northwest (entrance) elevation has five bays, with a boarded timber door in the penultimate bay to the outer left and a bipartite gabled dormer above. A tripartite window is at ground level in the bay to the outer left. A boarded timber door is off-set to the right of centre, with a single window in the subsequent bay, and a bipartite attic light beneath the gable in the bay to the outer right. The southwest side elevation features steps leading to a part glazed boarded timber door with small-paned sidelights, set within what was formerly a cart opening. A single window is in the bay to the outer left. A gabled wing, formerly kennels, projects to the outer right, featuring a boarded timber door at ground level and a single window centred beneath the apex.

The sawmill, on the northeast front elevation, consists of a single-storey range extending to a flush gabled bay to the outer right and a later gabled wing projecting to the outer left. A catslide corrugated iron roof spans the original range, and the interior contains sawmill equipment including a saw bench marked ‘T Brown & Sons Duns’. A projecting wing to the outer left has a square-headed garage opening and a boarded timber door off-set to the left of centre. A stair leads to a boarded timber door at first floor level. The southeast side elevation of the sawmill has three bays and adjoins the former kennels to the left. It features a single window off-set to the left of centre, a boarded timber door in the bay to the outer left and a tripartite window breaking the eaves beneath a kingpost-trussed gable in the bay to the outer right. A mill lade and Francis turbine are also present.

The kennels, on the south front elevation, form a lower two-bay wing adjoining the sawmill, completing the T-plan arrangement. This wing has boarded timber doors in both bays. Simple wrought-iron railings enclose a coped exercise area to the front.

The windows are predominantly lying-pane, with some replacement small-pane glazing to the southwest side. There are small skylights. The roofs are grey slate, with corrugated iron to the sawmill. Cast-iron rainwater goods are incorporated and brick-built ridge stacks are present. A single circular can is located on the south side.

The interior of the main building has largely been converted for commercial premises, while the kennels and sawmill were out of use in 1997. A plain cobbled courtyard is located to the front, and a rubble coped rubble wall encloses the site to the northwest.
