Description
19 Howegate in Hawick is an early to earlier 19th century, three-storey, three-bay end-terrace tenement that has been redeveloped by Aitken & Turnbull of Hawick in the late 20th century. The building is situated on a sloping site and features a full-height bowed stair tower at the rear, added in the 1980s. The structure is constructed of roughly squared rubble, painted at the ground floor, with painted ashlar dressings, while the side and rear are rendered.
The ground floor has a cornice and a band course that separates the first and second floors. The southwest corner displays raised long-and-short quoins. The five-bay shopfront includes one blind doorway and two doors with rectangular fanlights at the center, along with regular fenestration that features raised ashlar margins and projecting cills above; the fenestration is irregular in other areas. The shops have plate glass windows, while the rest of the building predominantly features four-pane glazing in sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a coped, rendered gablehead stack with circular clay cans, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.
