Description
Carlops Parish Church, built in 1850 by Charles Lawson, is a broad-plan, gabled church featuring both pointed and round-headed arched windows that are adorned with diamond-lattice lead glazing. The church is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone rubble, with chamfered ashlar dressings.
On the east elevation, there are steps leading up to a two-leaf timber panelled door set within a round arch. Flanking this door are round-arch windows, and above it is a pointed-arch window. The apex supports a dated base stone and a replacement timber bellcote that houses the original bell.
The interior of the church was largely refurbished in 2008 and 2009 by Todd and Taylor of Edinburgh. It features an early to mid 19th century Gothic organ, likely created by James Bruce. The stained glass includes a piece titled 'Living Water' by local artist Emma Butler-Cole Aiken, installed in the north window in 2008, as well as a panel in the east window recess by Douglas Hamilton.
