Description

The Great Polish Map of Scotland, located at the Barony Castle Hotel, was designed by Kazimierz Trafas and Roman Wolnik with assistance from J Szewczuk, Z Olecki, and M Raton, between 1974 and 1976. This large sculptured concrete topographical relief map measures 50 meters by 40 meters and represents mainland Scotland and the Western Isles at a scale of 1:10,000, with a 500 percent vertical exaggeration. It is set within an oval pool excavation that is 1.5 meters deep in the garden grounds to the south of the Barony Castle Hotel.

The coastal outline is made of shuttered concrete, standing 50 centimeters high and filled with rubble, soil, and concrete to create a level foundation for the landmass above sea level. The terraced core consists of brick, tin, and concrete terraces scaled to the nearest 300, 600, or 900 meters above sea level. The surface is made of fine-mix concrete, shaped to represent the topography, and features embedded plastic pipes that supply water to the major rivers, lochs, and surrounding sea. The map was painted to illustrate land use, including urban and forest areas, with traces of the original paint remaining as of 2012. A plastered cinder-block retaining wall supports the pool.
