Description

Bankend Cottage, part of the larger Bankend House, dates to 1845, with subsequent additions and alterations. It is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular house, with a single-storey, lean-to addition to the outer left side, a two-storey addition to the rear forming an L-plan, and a single-storey with attic addition—originally part of the main house—that has been converted into a separate cottage with an attached garage. The main house is constructed from harl-pointed whinstone rubble with cream sandstone dressings, while parts of the rear cottage are rendered, and the lean-to addition features red brick. A raised base course is present, along with droved sandstone quoins and surrounds to the openings. Lightly droved margins are also visible, along with sandstone mullions to the Venetian windows and projecting cills. A single-storey, irregular-plan outbuilding is situated to the southwest.

The main entrance, on the southeast elevation, features a timber panelled door centred at ground level, accompanied by a two-pane fanlight. Stylised brackets support a mutuled cornice above; a single window is aligned above the door at the first floor. Venetian windows are positioned at ground level in the outer left and right bays, with keystoned, round-arched pediments dated '18?' to the left and '?45?' to the right. Single windows are aligned above these. A stylised Venetian-shaped opening is centred in the lean-to addition on the outer left.

The southwest elevation of Bankend House features modern openings in the projecting lean-to addition at ground level, along with single windows in both bays at the first floor. A single-storey porch addition is recessed to the left, with a single window at the first floor and another at ground level in the outer left bay. Bankend Cottage's southwest elevation is five bays wide and features a replacement door in the penultimate bay to the outer right, a single window in the outer right bay, and a gabled dormer above. A tripartite opening is present in the bay to the left of the entrance, also with a gabled dormer above. Single windows occupy the remaining two bays to the left, where two-leaf boarded timber doors lead into the garage.

Plate glass and 4- and 12-pane glazing are used in timber sash and case windows, although modern windows are found in the lean-to addition and various skylights are present. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring raised stone skews and moulded skewputts. Some cast-iron rainwater goods are present. Corniced apex stacks are on the original block, with various circular cans; other stacks have been rebuilt in brick, with some circular cans also.

The outbuilding is constructed of harl-pointed rubble with red brick dressings. Its north elevation has a boarded timber door offset to the left of centre. The roof of the outbuilding is a combination of grey slate and pantile, with a terracotta ridge tiling. Dry rubble walls enclose the site to the front.
