Description
Doocot House, located at Spitalhaugh, is a garden cottage built in the mid-19th century, with later additions and alterations. It features a single-storey and attic design, with a rectangular plan and twin gables. The left gable has dovecot ports and ledges, while both gables are topped with arrow-head finials on the garden (south) elevation. The building is constructed from red, squared and snecked rubble, accented with ashlar dressings. The northern elevation has an advanced gable that includes a stack and a cast-iron finial.
To the south, there is a rubble addition, and to the east, a half-piended addition that showcases a mid-17th century carved panel featuring eclipse and rose motifs, likely crafted by John Gifford. The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, and the roof is covered with grey slate. The building has coped end and ridge stacks, each with tall octagonal clay cans, and features cast-iron rainwater goods.
In the garden, there is a low arcaded wall at the center, which may date back to the 17th century, along with an arrangement of additional carved architectural fragments.
