Description
Cockburnspath Station House is a single-storey, four-bay H-plan building constructed in 1846, designed in a plain Italianate style. It originally served as both a station and the station master's residence, and it is now a private home. The building features deep eaves and has a later lean-to porch on the northeast side, which includes a large window, a decorative tiled floor, a modern glazed door, and a slated roof. There is also a conservatory on the southwest side. The structure is made of squared snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings and has a base course. The windows are irregularly arranged, with bipartite mullioned windows in the gables on the northeast elevation and a slightly advanced window on the southwest gable. The southeast elevation has a stop-chamfered doorway within an advanced gabled porch, flanked by narrow windows.
Inside, the station house features timber panelled doors in all rooms and original chimneypieces in the main rooms. The kitchen includes a small cast-iron range from the early 20th century, adorned with green tiles.
The booking office, dating from the late 19th century, has a timber-panelled counter with cupboards and drawers, a panelled screen, and a glazed partition above. It also retains an original chimneypiece and grate, along with some timber-boarded panelling at dado height.
The roof is covered with graded grey slates and features corniced stacks, some of which are cylindrical clay cans. The windows predominantly have 12- and 8-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames.
