Description

This is a possibly late 18th century cottage with later additions and alterations, situated within a steading range at Polwarth. The cottage is a 2-storey (with a single-storey attic at the rear) rectangular building, originally 4 bays wide, with a later single-storey, pitched addition at the rear. The exterior is finished in painted harl with painted margins. The upper windows at the front are squat and rectangular, and have projecting cills consistently applied throughout the building.

The house's east elevation, which serves as the entrance front, features a part-glazed timber panelled door in the penultimate bay on the outer right. A single window sits above the door, and single windows are present at both ground and first floors in the remaining bays to the left and right. The north elevation has a single window at ground level offset to the left of centre. An attic window is offset to the right. A single-storey addition projects to the outer right and incorporates a recessed window and two boarded timber doors. The rear (west) elevation features a part-glazed timber door in the penultimate bay towards the outer left, flanked by single windows, with another single window offset to the right of centre. A single-storey addition projects to the outer right. The south elevation retains a small-paned door in the bay on the outer right, a ground-floor window to the left, and an attic window offset to the left of centre. A single-storey addition is adjoined to the outer left.

Most windows are timber sash and case, with 8 or 12 panes of glass. Small skylights are located at the rear. The cottage is roofed with grey slate tiles, and has cast-iron rainwater goods. Red brick apex stacks are present on the north and south sides, topped with circular cans. The interior of the cottage was not inspected in 1998.

The steading is constructed of harl-pointed red rubble sandstone with sandstone dressings, which are tooled and droved. Rubble quoins are visible, along with long and short surrounds to openings and projecting cills. The south elevation of the northern range has a boarded timber door offset to the left of centre and a small-pane window in the bay to the outer right. A taller range is adjoined to the outer left, partly obscured by the west range. The north rear elevation of the steading features regularly-spaced small openings spanning the full width. To the right of this is a taller range with a boarded timber door to the ground floor left, a single window to the ground floor right, and finally a boarded opening that breaks the eaves slightly offset to the right.

The east elevation of the west range incorporates a 2-storey, 3-bay former cartshed and granary with square-headed cart openings in all ground-floor bays – boarded timber doors are present on the outer left and right, and one is missing in the centre. Part-ventilated windows are positioned above. A lower 2-bay range projects slightly to the left, featuring a boarded timber door to the right and a part-ventilated window to the left. The elevation to the left of this is blind. The rear (west) elevation of the steading shows various gabled projections running east to west. A forestair provides access to a gabled upper entrance at the rear of the former cartshed and granary. The gable end of a separate north range has a 2-leaf boarded timber door offset to the left of centre.

Roofs are predominantly grey slate, with some corrugated-iron sections; stone skews are present, along with small skylights. Cast-iron rainwater goods are visible. Interior spaces of the steading were not inspected in 1998.
