Description

Bullock Court and Implement Shed, located at Buxley near Manderston House, was designed by John Kinross around 1900. This U-plan structure reflects a Scottish 17th-century style and is situated to the northeast of a farm complex. It consists of a turreted bullock range to the south, an implement shed in the center, and an altered calves range to the north, with an open court to the east. The building is constructed from squared and snecked stone with ashlar dressings, and part of it is harled.

The bullock range features a south elevation that includes a taller gabled end of the implement shed on the outer left, a lower single-storey elevation of the bullock box at the center, and a tall, gablet-capped buttress with a two-stage tower on the right. The center has a roll-moulded door surround flanked by ventilator grilles. The tower has a polygonal ashlar lower stage with a roll-moulded door to the north and a narrow window to the southeast. It transitions to a corbelled round second stage with two small windows under the eaves, topped with a cornice and a conical roof featuring a leaded ball finial. The north elevation has two doors, each with rounded arrises.

The implement shed has a gabled end to the south, which features a window in a high-relief surround that breaks into the gablehead. This area is adorned with a carved vine and initials, possibly "IPM," in a scroll-flanked pediment above. The shed is open to the west with a five-bay carriage arcade supported by large cast-iron columns. There are five openings to the court, which are now blocked.

The outer range contains a calving area. Originally single-storey, it was later raised to two-storeys to the east in a gabled loft. The court is partly screened by gablet coped rubble walls. The building features small-pane timber sash and case windows, graded grey slates, and stone ridges.
