Description

Dunkeld Cathedral features a choir that is currently used as a parish church. The choir, built in the 13th century and altered in the early 14th century, is a 4-bay structure without aisles, measuring approximately 31 meters by 9 meters. The interior north wall has arcading, while the south wall includes a sedilia with cinquefoil arches. The choir was re-roofed in 1600, renovated in 1691, and repaired in 1762, during which the windows had their tracery replaced or repaired, and new pinnacles were added. The parapet was renovated from 1814 to 1818 by architect Archibald Elliot, and the choir was re-roofed and re-furnished by architects Dunn & Watson in 1908.

Adjacent to the choir is the chapter house, a two-storey structure built around 1450 to 1475, with a ground floor that is vaulted in two compartments. Both the choir and chapter house contain several carved stones and burial monuments. In the choir, there is a Celtic cross slab with sculptured figures, a red sandstone cross slab with hollow rounded angles, an effigy of Bishop William Sinclair from the 14th century, and an effigy of a knight in full armor believed to be Alexander Stewart, 1st Earl of Buchan, who died in 1406. There is also a memorial to the 42nd Highlanders, created by Steell in 1872. The chapter house features two monuments to the Atholl family: one for the Marquess of Atholl from the early 17th century and another for the 4th Duke of Atholl in marble, dating to 1833.
