Description

7 South St John's Place is a late 19th century, two-storey, three-bay Neo-Jacobean commercial building. It features a large Dutch gablet with a moulded crest at the center. The exterior is constructed of stugged red sandstone ashlar with polished ashlar dressings. There is a base course, and a moulded string and cill course separates the ground and first floors. The ground floor has large plate glass shop windows flanking a centrally located basket-arched doorway, which includes a timber panelled door and a twin box fanlight. Above this, there is a corbelled-out, balustraded balcony detail.

On the first floor, a gently bowed, quatrepartite window with stone mullions and a transom is set within a keystoned segmental arched recess. The pedimented Dutch gablet above features a carved roundel at the center displaying the Perth City crest, which includes a double-headed imperial eagle bearing a shield with a holy lamb and a banner inscribed 'Pro Rege Lege Et Grege'. Flanking this are stone mullioned and transomed bipartite windows.

At the rear, facing Flesher's Vennel, there is a single-storey wing from the 19th century. Its front wall contains a carved stone with a thistle emblem, the initials LR MB, and the date 1766. This wing has multi-pane glazing in its plate glass window and door, along with a timber fascia.

The first floor predominantly features single-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are coped red brick end stacks with clay cans, coped skews, and shouldered and corbelled skewputts. The building also has cast-iron rainwater goods, which are recessed behind the string and cill courses and feature ornate hoppers.
