Description
The Power Station and Fish Ladder at Loch Faskally in Pitlochry is a significant classical modern structure designed by Harold Ogle Tarbolton as part of the North of Scotland Hydro Electric Board architectural panel, with engineering by J Guthrie Brown of Sir Alexander Gibb and Partners, built between 1947 and 1951. This 7-bay rectangular power station and dam complex features prominent drum gates and a balustraded walkway that extends over the gates, situated on the River Tummel with Loch Faskally behind.
The building is constructed from pre-cast concrete blocks and includes a slightly recessed blocking course with a coped parapet. Pilasters divide the bays of the turbine hall, which has roll moulded and recessed segmental headed openings. The turbine hall has four symmetrical bays on the southwest side, with the balustraded walkway and fixed spillway on segmental arches to the northeast. Tall rectangular windows at ground level in recessed segmental arched surrounds are divided by pilasters, with small square windows above. The advanced entrance bay on the left features a broad doorway at ground level with a bronze commemorative plaque to Sir Edward MacColl and a broad window above. There is also a recessed bay on the far left with square windows.
On the southwest elevation, there is an entrance to the workshop at ground level, accompanied by a large 6-light window above, flanking taller centre lights. The northeast elevation shows a single bay of the turbine hall recessed to the left, featuring a deep-set architraved opening with a moulded crest of the North of Scotland Hydro Electric Board above the eaves.
The building predominantly has small pane metal glazing in painted metal frames and a recessed flat platform roof with integrated rainwater goods. Inside, the turbine hall has a plain functional interior with an open trussed steel roof and a large travelling gantry crane, along with some original tiles remaining on the floor.
