Description
Auchterarder House is a two-storey, asymmetrical building designed by William Burn in 1832 for J. Hunter. It features a Scots Jacobean style with dark red stugged ashlar and crowstepped gables, some of which have sculptured dormerheads. The interior has been largely remodelled in a lavish Renaissance style, including a large, richly sculptured porte cochere supported by Doric columns, a marble-lined conservatory, and a billiard room located in the south wing, along with terraces added by Burnet Son and Campbell in 1887 for James Reid, the art collector.
A tower is positioned at the angle of the eastern front, which originally had a conical roof but was raised in the early 1900s with an ogee capped turret and a balustraded parapet. The later work is constructed from Dumfries stone, which is a brighter red than the original material.
