Museum of Abernethy, School Wynd, Abernethy

Mornington Cottage is a late 18th or early 19th century, two-storey, three-bay house with a rectangular plan. It is built from rubble with harl pointing and features droved red long and short dressings. The pitched roof is covered with grey slates and has coped chimney stacks with cans on each gable. The house has straight skews, and the skewputts display an unusual floral circular pattern. Attached to the south gable is a pedestrian gateway with a lintel inscribed with initials and the year '1757'. At the rear of the cottage, there is a single-storey, monopitched outshot with rubble walls that is open on the north side.

Next to the north gable of the cottage is a single-storey building with an attic that was originally used as stables and a byre, which was converted into a museum in 2000. This structure is also made of rubble and has irregular openings, some of which were added during the museum conversion. The windows, doors, and droved red dressings have been replaced. To the right, there is a shallow arched cart opening with a two-leaf timber boarded door. The roof is piended and covered with grey slates, and the east roof pitch includes later rooflights. At the rear, a stair tower was added as part of the museum conversion.
