Description
St Martin's Abbey was built between 1791 and 1793, with the latter year marked on the building. It is a three-storey structure with five windows on the south-facing front, which is made of ashlar stone. The original entrance is located on this front, featuring a wide central bay that slightly projects and includes a Venetian window on the first floor. There is a simple round-arched chapel that was added to the southeast in 1842-1843. The entrance was later moved to the north, where a large addition was made along with internal alterations by D. Bryce in 1860-1861. Most of Bryce's additions were removed, but his porch was relocated to a new position at the center of the north front. A new grand staircase was also added in the mid-18th century style, complete with a Rococo ceiling, designed by architect A.G. Heiton in 1921.
