Description
5 Marshall Place in Perth is a symmetrical, 31-bay terraced building designed by Robert Reid between 1809 and 1832. The central part features an advanced 3-storey, 5-bay section, flanked by 2-storey, 10-bay attic and basement sections on either side, and 3-storey, 3-bay outer pavilions at both ends. The building is constructed of pale sandstone ashlar, some of which is painted, with raised cills at the ground level, a continuous cill course at the first floor, and a moulded cornice. Steps lead up to the main door entrances, which over-sail the basement.
The central section has recessed round-arched windows at the ground level, with radial fanlights above the doorways at the outer bays. The first floor features consoled cornices above the windows, while the second floor has a central Diocletian lunette and a stepped blocking course above. The end pavilions also have recessed round-arched windows at the ground level and central lunette windows at the second floor, with consoled windows on the first floor of the east pavilion only. Both pavilions have pyramidal roofs.
The windows are predominantly timber sash and case with 12-pane and plate glass glazing. The building has tall and broad coped ridge stacks with clay cans, a grey slate roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. There are various canted dormers throughout the structure.
Inside, some properties feature fine curving cantilevered staircases and partially oval-plan principal rooms with paired curved timber doors. There is a wide variety of plaster and marble chimneypieces, columned and consoled entrance halls, and other Classical detailing throughout the building.
The boundary walls consist of a rubble wall with ashlar coping along Marshall Place, some sections featuring cast-iron railings.
