Description

The Keeper's House, located on Berneray, Barra Head, was designed by engineer Robert Stevenson in 1833 as part of the lighthouse complex. The lighthouse tower itself is tall and circular, with a battered form and a single-storey, 7-bay base with a curved outer wall rising 683 feet above high water. The tower is constructed of whitewashed squared and coursed rubble with ashlar margins, featuring a base course with cornice and a low parapet. A tall door is located at ground level, with additional doors in the low flanking bays, wrapping around the tower to form a semicircular base. Narrow windows are present, with those close to the top being proportionally smaller. A corbelled walkway is topped with an ironwork parapet, leading to a lantern with diagonal astragals and a finialled domed cap.

The Keeper's House boasts a symmetrical design. The principal elevation is stepped, with a single window in each bay. The centre bay is set back, and features a stone cross finial at the wallhead, while the flanking and outer bays are slightly advanced and include projecting penultimate bays with stepped parapets and string courses. The courtyard elevation, facing the lighthouse, is 8 bays wide, with a corniced doorpiece centrally positioned and flanking windows to the outer bays; a door and adjacent window are found at the centre bays. Most windows feature a 12-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case style. Paired circular ashlar stacks, along with a single square stack, are present, all topped with cans. A cobbled setts area defines the courtyard.

A graveyard is situated nearby, enclosed by semicircular-coped large squared and coursed rubble blocks forming a circular burial enclosure. Carved stones commemorate "Catharine Black" and "Alexander McIntosh," both of whom died aged 2 years. A mural monument, weathered but commemorating a daughter and son of the Reid family, features a stepped base and a pyramidal cap projecting above the wallhead.

Ancillary structures include enclosures that were later roofed to serve as garden stores. A single-chamber vaulted ice house or cold store is also present, built of roughly squared rubble. A flat-roofed ancillary building, constructed in Aberdeen bond, features a central stack, small windows, four doors on the opposite elevation, and an outer screen wall. A rectangular-plan stable range adjoins the complex, its roof now lacking lead. Garden and boundary walls are constructed of semicircular-coped rubble.
