Description
The Bank of Scotland, located at 100 and 102 High Street in Forres, was designed by Thomas Mackenzie and built between 1852 and 1854. This three-storey, five-bay building is styled as a banking palazzo. It features polished ashlar stonework, which is finely tooled on the first and second floors, while the ground floor has a channelled finish. The windows are set within pilaster aedicules, and there is a Roman Doric porch.
The first-floor windows are aediculed and have pediments that alternate between segmental and triangular shapes. The building includes a guilloche moulded band course and a modillioned cornice, topped with a balustrade. The wallhead stacks are coped, and the roof is covered with slate.
Inside, the banking hall has enriched cornices on the ceiling, adding to the building's architectural detail.
