Description

19-21 High Street in Penicuik is a two-storey and attic terrace building from the later 19th century, featuring Scottish Baronial architectural details and shops on the ground floor. The exterior is made of polished sandstone ashlar, with a base course, a cornice, and a blocking course at the first floor. The shop fronts include hoodmoulds, chamfered and moulded doorpieces, and stop-chamfered arrises.

The northwest elevation, which is the principal front, has a three-bay shop front at ground level. This includes a round-arched doorpiece with a modern glazed timber door in the center, flanked by two-pane windows. To the left of center is another round-arched doorpiece with a modern door and a blind fanlight featuring a tooled sunburst pattern. To the right of center is a segmental-arched vehicular pend opening with a blind timber fanlight also displaying a sunburst pattern. There are two additional shop fronts on the outer left and right; the left one has a modern door with a shallow plate glass rectangular fanlight and a two-pane plate glass window, while the right one features a round-arched doorpiece with a former two-leaf, six-panel timber door and a plate glass semicircular fanlight, alongside a bipartite window. At the first floor, there is a bipartite window centered above the shop front, flanked by round-arched windows. The penultimate bay from the left has a gable-crowstepped oriel window that breaks the eaves, topped with a pyramidal finial and a small light centered in the gablehead. A similar window is found in the penultimate bay from the right, with bipartite windows in the outer left and right bays.

The southwest elevation features a coursed rubble gable that is attached to a neighboring terrace. The southeast elevation was not seen during the last inspection in 1999, and the northeast elevation is also adjoined to a terraced neighbor.

The interiors were not seen in 1999. The building predominantly has plate glass timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate in an M shape, featuring lead ridges and three evenly arranged lancet-headed slate-hung dormers with decorative finials. The stacks are made of tooled ashlar and rendered and lined gablehead stacks, which are corniced and coped with octagonal cans. The building also has cast-iron rainwater goods and coped skews.
