Description
The structure dates to the late 18th century and comprises a near-quadrangular walled garden. The walls are constructed of random rubble with polished dressings, which have been droved to margins, and rubble coping. There is evidence of wall heightening, particularly to the north-west. A low entrance faces north, featuring long and short red sandstone dressings and a boarded timber door. A secondary entrance is located to the south-east, also with a boarded timber door. A lean-to building is incorporated into the north-west wall, with a replacement corrugated iron roof and doors, and stone skews. The wall extends to Currie Bridge in the southern corner (listed separately). The south-west wall was obscured by trees in 1997 and its integrity is uncertain.
The interior, overgrown at the time of inspection in 1997, contains a waisted sundial in the centre, for which the gnomon is missing. The sundial is documented on the first edition Ordnance Survey map from 1852 and is now part of the Borthwick Castle estate.
