Description
The North West Steading Range at Gowkshill comprises an earlier 19th-century farmhouse and associated steading arranged around a courtyard. The farmhouse is built of tooled sandstone rubble with stugged dressings, chamfered reveals, and gabled dormers. The symmetrical south-west elevation features a single-storey, gabled porch with timber bargeboards and kingpost detail, incorporating a glazed timber door and windows in flanking bays. Dormers light the first floor. The south-east elevation was not visible in 1998. The north-east elevation is asymmetrical, with a single-storey gabled addition to the centre and left bays, complemented by a doorway to the right and windows to the left return and first floor. The north-west elevation is blank, with a single-storey rubble and corrugated-iron addition at ground floor. The farmhouse predominantly has 12-pane replacement timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with lead ridge, coped stone skews, paired, polished, coped gablehead stacks with circular cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior was not seen in 1998.
The steading is a courtyard-plan arrangement, primarily of tooled sandstone rubble and squared and snecked sandstone. The south-west elevation features a two-storey, six-bay block with a single-storey gabled bay advanced to the right, a brick chimney on a sandstone plinth, an archway flanked by a boarded timber door and window, and infilled archways to the left return. A window is located in the third bay from the left, with narrow vertical openings to the outer left and a pair of irregularly sized windows to the right. A single-storey, two-bay range adjoins to the outer left, with sliding timber doors to each bay. The south-east elevation is asymmetrical, with a two-storey, gabled bay to the left and single-storey bays to the right.
The courtyard elevations display varied features. The north-west elevation comprises a single-storey, three-bay stable block with broad, partially infilled openings containing timber stable doors and a boarded timber door in an attic dormer. The north-east elevation is asymmetrical, again with a two-storey, six-bay arrangement, a stable block projecting at two bays to the left, timber stable doors to the two centre bays of the ground floor, a six-pane window to the penultimate bay to the right, and irregular fenestration to the first floor. The south-east courtyard elevation combines a gabled bay with an infilled segmental-arched opening housing a stable door and window, a modern infill to the left, and two recessed bays flanking to the right with a stable door to the left and a boarded timber door in an infilled segmental arch to the right. The south-west courtyard elevation presents a long, two-bay block with stable doors and a three-bay addition to the outer left with stable doors to each bay, capped with a corrugated iron roof. The steading predominantly features timber-framed modern glazing, grey slate roofs with lead ridges, regularly-placed roof lights, coped stone skews, and a mix of cast-iron and PVCu rainwater goods. The interior was not seen in 1998.
