Description

Crichton Mains is an Arts and Crafts farmhouse designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson in collaboration with Wardrop and Reid, built between 1885 and 1887. The building is irregularly massed in a Z-plan and is two stories high, constructed from coursed pink and white sandstone, featuring ashlar cills, mullions, and skews.

The principal elevation on the southeast side has a projecting enclosed stone porch with a pitched roof and a stone finial on the gable, which contains a deeply inset timber door. To the left is a projecting wing with a blind ground floor and a single bay on the right. Above, there is a tripartite window on the first floor with stone mullions and chamfered cills. The gable ends have plain stone skews topped with ornate stone ball finials. The main house to the right features a single window on the ground floor and a pair of windows on the first floor, with a tall multi-canned chimney stack positioned between at the roof level. A catslide bipartite dormer is located to the left.

The southwest elevation displays regular fenestration on the main block, with an advanced bay window on the ground floor to the right, and consistent fenestration on the lower wing. The northwest (rear) elevation is not visible. The northeast elevation has a two-bay arrangement on the first floor to the left, with the southeast entrance to the lower rear wing on the right, featuring regular fenestration and a multi-potted chimney stack at the apex of the gable.

The farmhouse is fitted with 12-pane timber sash and case windows and has a piended grey slate roof with zinc ridging. A high narrow stone stack is supported by a metal rod at the roof, featuring both tall and short cans. The rainwater goods are made of buff-coloured cast iron. The interior was not seen in 2000.
