Description
These are a group of six farmworkers' cottages, designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson and built in 1885. A mid-20th century extension was added later. The cottages are arranged in a single storey, symmetrical range, with projecting gabled ends framing a central archway. They are constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings.
The front (southeast) elevation features a central gable with a pointed-arched pend with rubble voussoirs and a hood mould. An inset architraved date stone sits below the gablehead, and there are plain stone skews. The roof is slate-covered, with small stone stacks at the ridge. Flanking the archway are four cottages, each with a tripartite window to the right of the doorway and a bipartite window to the left. Two stone stacks are present on each row, while the end cottages have an entrance doorway on the main block and a window in the re-entrant angles, with gabled ends, featuring a window and a circular window above.
The southwest elevation shows a single-storey, flat-roofed extension returning from number 9 and a high rubble chimney stack with a stone neck cope. The northwest (rear) elevation has three cottages flanking the arch, but the original elevation is largely obscured by single-storey, flat-roofed extensions to the central four cottages, and further extensions to the rear of number 13. The northeast elevation mirrors the southwest, with a flat-roofed extension returning from number 14 and a high rubble chimney stack with a stone neck cope.
The front windows are 6-pane, slightly bowed casement windows, bipartite and tripartite in design. The roof is graded slate-piended, with some modern Velux roof lights to the rear pitch. Chimneys have single cans on the short stacks, a triple can on the high stack, and paired plain cans.
The interior was not inspected in 2000.
Sir Robert Rowand Anderson also designed the farmhouse at Crichton Mains, along the road, in 1885-7, and these cottages were built to house workers from that estate. They are grouped around an arched thoroughfare that leads to drying greens at the back. Each cottage originally had a small front garden, a shared drive, the rear green, and an outhouse and toilet. Later alterations included small flat-roofed kitchen/bathroom extensions to the rear or side, but more substantial replacement additions have altered the rear elevation, reducing its original simplicity. The front elevation and gardens are now enclosed by a hedge and a low rubble wall.
