Description

32 West Street in Penicuik is a classical house built around 1862, originally serving as the manse for the South Church. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure featuring a principal elevation made of stugged ashlar, while the rest of the building is constructed from stugged, squared, and snecked sandstone. The house has a base course, a cill course at the first floor, a block cornice, and a blocking course topped with a central tablet. The projecting cills and strip quoin at the first floor to the left add to its architectural detail.

The north elevation, which is the principal front, features an advanced porch at the ground level, topped with a block pediment and a deep frieze. Broad panelled pilasters flank a recessed former two-leaf, four-panel timber door, which has glazed upper panels and a decorative rectangular lozenge-patterned fanlight. The windows in the other ground-level bays and the regular fenestration on the first floor contribute to its symmetrical appearance. The corner to the left at the ground level is chamfered, while it sweeps to a square at the first floor.

On the east elevation, there is a barred window to the left of centre at ground level, and a recessed later doorway to the outer left, which consists of a two-leaf metal door with a rolled steel beam as a lintel. The south elevation, or rear, has an infilled doorway to the right of centre at ground level and is irregularly fenestrated, featuring a window to the left of centre and a barred window to the outer left at ground level, along with a pair of windows centered at the first floor and additional windows to the outer left and right at the first floor. The west elevation is blank, with a pair of infilled irregular doors centered at ground level.

The interior was not seen in 1999. The house predominantly features eight-pane timber sash and case windows, a graded grey slate roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The stugged ashlar wallhead stacks are corniced and have circular cans.

The boundary wall consists of a low ashlar wall along the street, with saddleback coping that steps up to the right. It is topped with iron railings featuring some floreate finials, and there are iron gates at the center and left.
