Description

The Laundry House at Dalkeith Policies is a former laundry building from the mid-18th century, with later additions. It is a single-storey structure featuring nine bays and exhibits an austere classical design. The exterior is constructed of droved ashlar, while the north elevation is made of squared and snecked rubble. The building has an eaves cornice, base and lintel courses, raised margins, and long and short quoins.

On the south elevation, there are five bays in the centre that are advanced, which is an early 19th-century addition. This section features a cornice and blocking course, with a panelled door at the centre and a large, blocked fanlight above. The fenestration is regular.

The east elevation consists of four bays arranged in a 3-1 pattern, with an additional bay to the right that is a later addition. There is a boarded door in the bay to the right of centre, accompanied by a three-pane fanlight. The fenestration remains regular.

The west elevation has three bays with regular fenestration. There are two doors and two windows in a projection to the left, which has a pentice roof.

The north elevation features seven bays, with three bays in the centre that are advanced. There is a long projection attached to the outer bay on the right. In the penultimate bay to the left, there is a panelled door that was originally a window. The fenestration is regular, with a small window located between the bays to the left and centre, and a window in the outer bay to the left that has been blocked. There is also an ashlar-margined slate-hung piended dormer window in the five bays to the left.

The sash and case windows have a 24-pane glazing pattern, although many of the windows are boarded. The piended roof is covered with grey slates, and the ridge stacks are made of ashlar on the south and north sides, while the east and west sides feature brick stacks.

The interior was not seen in 1990.
