Description

Greenock Crematorium, designed by Cullen, Lochhead and Brown in 1959, is a single-storey, church-form crematorium built in the Scandinavian Modernist style, featuring notable detailing. The entrance front (east) has a 5-bay loggia, while to the south, there are rectangular-plan chimneys and low, flat-roofed buildings. The structure is constructed of red and yellow brick with grey concrete dressings, and it includes three full-height windows on the west side. Steps lead from the west to a landscaped memorial garden.

The entrance elevation is asymmetrical, featuring three shallow steps leading up to the 5-bay loggia with wide openings that resemble pylons. To the right, there is an advanced grey concrete porch-cochere with small square openings. A metal panel to the right displays the Greenock insignia and the date 1959. To the left, there is a slightly advanced and raised square-plan, flat-roofed Memorial Chapel, which has a large, deeply set full-height square window with 15 panes.

The building exhibits a variety of window styles, including some small fixed-light windows, the large 15-pane window in the Memorial Chapel, and three large 9-pane full-height windows on the west side. The roof is covered with grey slate, and it features cast iron rainwater goods and a copper piended platform roof on the chimney.

Inside, the original decorative scheme is intact and showcases good detailing. The main chapel has a segmental arched ceiling with a gallery to the north, and strip clerestory-type windows to the east. The entrance features timber doors with Greek Cross-style details. The floor is adorned with blue, black, and cream chequerboard pattern tiles, which are echoed in the catafalque. Shallow, curved black marble steps lead to the sanctuary area, which is furnished with timber pews, a pulpit, and a lectern. The space is illuminated by 5-light chandeliers with hour-glass shaped lampshades. A pulley mechanism has been retained.
