Description

A 2-storey, symmetrical 3-bay house designed by Sir Albert Richardson and completed in 1958 as part of the wider Tormore Distillery complex. It is Grade B listed.

The house faces south towards the A95 road and is built in the modernist industrial tradition characteristic of the distillery complex. The walls are white harled with simulated sandstone ashlar margins and dressings. The most distinctive feature is the presence of three facetted canted gables—two on the end (east and west) and one implied through the composition. The outer facets of these end gables contain ground and first-floor windows that continue the lines of the front fenestration. Both end gables feature central flues and are coped with sloped shoulders. The roof is finished in facetted grey-green slate.

The principal entrance is masked by a single-storey canted porch with narrow side lights and a slate roof. Windows throughout feature 12-pane glazing, and the building has deep base and eaves courses.

A single-storey service court and sunroom extends from the east gable in a 3-bay arrangement. The south elevation of this extension is blind and delineated by harled pilaster strips, with oculi (circular openings) positioned in the outer bays. This extension has a shallow piended copper roof.

The building stands within a larger distillery complex grouped in a wide shallow semi-circle facing west and fronting the A95 road. Most buildings across the complex are white harled with grey polished ashlar or bullfaced granite margins and dressings.
