Description

The Advie Parish Church, built by A & W Reid in Elgin between 1873 and 1874, features substantial additions and internal refitting by John Robertson of Inverness from 1904 to 1905. The church is constructed of rubble with tooled ashlar dressings.

This simple rectangular church, built in 1873-4, is oriented east-west and has small cusped lights. The 1904 addition includes a tower with a porch and a gabled lobby at the southwest, as well as a projecting bowed three-window bay at the southeast. The base of the two-stage tower has a recessed pointed-headed doorway under a shallow gabled porch, featuring double leaf panelled doors. The upper stage of the tower includes paired pointed-headed louvred lancets on each face, with a pierced parapet that has angle and centre pinnacles rising from angle buttresses and engaged centre piers. To the right, there is a projecting gable with a long two-light window and an apex cross. The bowed southeast bay has a piended bowed slate roof topped with an apex cast-iron weather vane. The church mainly features lattice-pane glazing and has a slate roof, with a vestry wing at the rear.

Inside, the church has Gothic decoration on the triple panelled backboard, a panelled pulpit at the northeast, and a reading desk at the southeast. The communion table is similarly detailed, complete with railings, and the pews have shaped ends. Various mural memorials are present, including those dedicated to Edward VII and the 7th and 8th Earls of Seafield. Some windows contain stained glass from various dates, including two by Heaton Butler and Bane of London.
